बालकांड
पंचदश सर्गः

मेधावीतु ततो ध्यात्वा स किंचिदिदमुत्तरम् ।
लब्ध संज्ञः ततस्तं तु वेदज्ञो नृपमब्रवीत् ॥

That highly intelligent Rishyasrumga, having thought over for a while and realized the course of action spoke to the king as follows.

इष्टिं तेहं करिष्यामि पुत्रीयां पुत्रकारणात् ।
अधर्व शिरसि प्रोक्तैः मंत्रै स्सिद्धाम् विधानतः ॥
ततः प्राक्रमदिष्टिं तां पुत्रीयां पुत्रकारणात् ।
जुहाव चाग्नौ तेजस्वी मंत्रदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥
ततो देवा स्सगंधर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।
भाग प्रतिग्रहार्थं वै समवेता यथाविधि ॥

' O King ! I will perform a Yaga by name "Putrakaameshti" with all mantras as specified in Adharva Veda for you to get sons'. Then that sage started the "Putrakaameshti" Yaga as per scriptures . That sage reading the mantras as specified offered the oblations in the fire as per scriptures. Then the Brahma as well as all the Devas , Gandharvas, Siddhas, venerable sages appeared in sacrificial hall to take their portion of the offerings.

तास्समेत्य यथान्यायं तस्मिन् सदसि देवताः ।
अब्रुवन् लोककर्तारं ब्रह्मणं वचनं महत् ॥

Then all the Devas having reached the congregation addressed the the creator of the worlds.

भगवन् त्वत्प्रसादेन रावणोनामा राक्षसः ।
सर्वान् नो बाधते वीर्यात् शासितुं तं न शक्नुमः ॥
त्वया तस्मै वरो दत्तः प्रीतेन भगवन् पुरा ।
मानयंतश्च तं नित्यं सर्वं तस्य क्षमामहे ॥
उद्वेजयति लोकां स्त्रीन् उच्छ्रितान् द्वेष्टि दुर्मतिः ।
शक्रं त्रिदशराजानं प्रधर्षयितुमिच्छति ॥
ऋषीन् यक्षान् सगंधर्वान् असुरान् ब्राह्मणां स्तथा ।
अतिक्रामति दुर्धर्षो वरदानेन मोहितः ॥

'O Brahman ! With your favor the Rakshasa by name Ravana is terrorizing everybody. We are unable to control him. Bhagavan pleased with his penances, long time ago, you gave him a boon. Respecting that boon we are bearing with his acts. That evil minded Rakshasa is harrassing all the inhabitants of the three worlds. He hates the exalted . He even wants to overpower Indra. Infatuated with power , he is harrassing Rishis, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Brahmins'

नैनं सूर्यः प्रतपति पार्स्वेवाति न मारुतः ।
चलोर्मि माली तं दृष्ट्वा समुद्रोपि न कंपते ॥
तन्महन्नो भयं तस्मात् राक्षसाद्घोरदर्शनात् ।
वधार्थं तस्य भगवन्नुपायं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥

' Afraid of him the Sun does not scorch , the wind does not blow, the seas known for high waves is subdued. O Great one ! we are afraid of the Rakshasa of fearful looks. Hence please think of a way to kill him'.

एवमुक्त स्सुरैस्सर्वैः चिंतयित्वा ततोsब्रवीत् ।
हंतायं विदितस्तस्य वधोपायो दुरात्मनः ॥
तेन गंधर्व यक्षाणां देव दानव रक्षसाम् ।
अवध्योsस्मीति वागुक्ता तथेत्युक्तं च तन्मया ॥
नाकीर्तयदवज्ञानात् तद्रक्षो मानुषां स्तदा ।
तस्मात् स मानुषाद्वध्यो मृत्युर्नान्योsस्य विद्यते ॥

Thus addressed by the Devas, Brahma thought for a moment and spoke as follows. ' The means to end that cruel man is clear. Ravana wanted boon so that he may not be killed by Devas , Gandharvas, Yakshas, and Ogres. I said "so be it". in his contempt for the humans he did not ask for protection against humans. Hence his death is certain at the hands of Humans. It is not possible for others to kill him'.

एतच्छ्रुत्वा प्रियं वाक्यं ब्रह्मणा समुदाहृतम् ।
सर्वे महर्षयो देवाः प्रहृष्टा स्तेsभवं स्तदा ॥
एतस्मिन्नंतरे विष्णुः उपयातो महाद्युतिः ।
शंखचक्रगदापाणिः पीतवासा जगत्पतिः ॥
ब्रह्मणा च समागम्य तत्र तस्थौ समाहितः ।
तमब्रुवन् सुराः सर्वे समभिष्टूय सन्नताः ॥

Hearing those pleasing words Devas , venerable sages and all others were overjoyed. Then the Lord of the universe resplendent in his yellow attire wielding conch , discus, and mace arrived at the sacrificial hall. Then he sat down along with Brahma. Thereupon all the Devas having prostrated themselves prayed to him as follows.

त्वां नियोक्ष्यामहे विष्णो लोकानां हितकाम्यया ।
राज्ञो दशरथस्य त्वं अयोध्याधिपतेः प्रभो ॥
धर्मज्ञस्य वदानस्य महर्षि समतेजसः ।
तस्य भार्यासु तिसृषु ह्रीश्री क्रीर्त्युपमासु च ॥
विष्णोपुत्त्रत्व मागच्छ कृत्वात्मानं चतुर्विथं ।
तत्र त्वं मानुषोभूत्वा प्रवृद्धं लोककंटकम् ।
अवध्यं दैवतै र्विष्णो समरे जहि रावणम् ॥

' Oh Great Vishnu ! in the interest of the whole world we are praying to you. The ruler of Ayodhya is in all respects a very capable man, knower of Dharma, and he is possessed of splendor equivalent of Maharshis. His three wives are equivalents of Hri, Shri and Kirti. You may assume the form of his four sons . There assuming the form of a human being you kill that cruel Ravana who cannot be killed by Devas, in a battle'.

स हि देवाश्च गंधर्वान् सिद्धांश्च मुनिसत्तामान् ।
राक्षसो रावणो मूर्खो वीर्योत्सेकेन भाधते ॥
ऋषयश्च ततस्तेन गंधर्वाप्सरसस्तथा ।
क्रीडंतो नंदनवने क्रूरेण किल हिंसिताः ॥

'That foolish Ravana , blinded by power is harrassing Devas, Gandharvas, Siddhas and venerable sages. That cruel Rakshasa is harrassing Rishis as well as Gandharvas and Apsaras who sport in Nandanavana'.

वदार्थं वयमायाताः तस्य वै मुनिभिः सह ।
सिद्धगंधर्वयक्षाश्च तत स्त्यां शरणं गता: ॥
त्वं गतिः परमा देव सर्वेषां नः परंतप ।
वधाय देवशत्रूणां नृणां लोके मनः कुरु ॥

'We along with Siddhas, Yakshas, Gandharvas and sages have come here to pray for our protection and killing of Ravana. Oh Great Vishnu , You are our last resort. To kill that enemy of Devas you may descend to the earth in a mortal form.'

एवमुक्तस्तु देवेशो विष्णुस्त्रिदशपुंगवः ।
पितामहापुरोगां स्तान् सर्वलोक नमस्कृतः ।
अब्रवीत् त्रिदशान् सर्वान् समेतान् धर्म संहितान् ॥

When thus extolled by all the Devas along with Brahma , Sri Vishnu the foremost among Gods and adored by all in all the the words , then addressed all Devas along with Brahman who asked for his protection.

भयं त्यजत भद्रं वो हितार्थं युधि रावणम् ।
सपुत्रपौत्रं सामात्यं समित्र ज्ञाति बांधवम् ।
हत्वा क्रूरं दुरात्मानं देवर्षीणां भयावहम् ॥
दश वर्ष सहस्राणि दशवर्षशतानि च ।
वत्स्यामि मानुषे लोके पालयन् पृथिवी मिमाम् ॥

' Be free of fear. You will have security. The cruel and despicable Ravana who is harrassing Devas and Rishis will be demolished along with his sons , grandsons, ministers, relatives and friends for the benefit of this world. Then for ten thousand years followed by ten hundred years I will live on the earth ruling the same'.

एवम् दत्त्वा वरं देवो देवानां विष्णु रात्मवान् ।
मानुषे चिंतयामास जन्मभूमिम् अथात्मनः ॥
ततः पद्म पलाशाक्षः कृत्वात्मानं चतुर्विथम् ।
पितरं रोचयामास तदा दशरथं नृपम् ॥

Having given an assurance thus the foremost among Gods Mahavishnu thought of the appropriate way of appearing on this earth . Then that lord whose eyes resemble pearls thought of appearing in the form of four sons of the king of Ayodhya.

तदा देवर्षिगंधर्वाः सरुद्राः साप्सरोगणाः ।
स्तुतिभिर्दिव्यरूपाभिः तुष्टुवुर्मधुसूदनम् ॥

Then Brahma , Rudra and all Devas along with venerable sages, Gandharvas, Apsarasas extolled Mahavishnu the destroyer of demon Madhu.

त मुद्धतं रावणमुग्र तेजसं
प्रवृद्ध दर्पं त्रिदशेश्वरद्विषम् ।
विरावणं साधु तपस्विकंटकं
तपस्विनामुद्दर तं भयावहम् ॥

' Ravana has terrible energy , immense arrogance. he hates Indra . he harasses Sadhus, Ascetics. He terrifies all . Destroy that Rakshasa.'

त मेव हत्वा सबलं स बांधवं
विरावणं रावण मुग्र पौरुषम् ।
स्वर्लोकमागच्छ गच्छ गतज्वरश्चिरं
सुरेंद्रगुप्तं गतदोषकल्मषम् ॥

'Having killed that cruel Ravana along with his forces, friends and all relatives , having removed the difficulties of all those praying to you , Oh Mahavishnu please return to your abode which is a place free of all impurities in the form of various frailties'.

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये
बालकांडे पंचदशस्सर्गः ॥
समाप्तं ॥

So ends the chapter 15 of Balakanda in Valmiki Ramayan.
